Electronic petitions (ePetitions) have been adopted in Australia and internationally to enhance public engagement with the political process, making democracy more accessible, participatory, and responsive.
By lowering geographic and logistical barriers, e-petitions make democracy more inclusive – the OECD notes that such tools allow “even those in remote areas or with mobility issues” to engage actively in public discourse. In fact, research finds e-petitions are now “one of the most widely-used and high-profile forms of public engagement” with parliaments, reflecting their role in modernizing civic participation.
